The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

I hope everyone’s summer is going well. I’m deep into edits on my fantasy series and a new romance story. Plus we decided to renovate. Just one room, but boy, does that list grow when you start a simple thing like painting the ceiling. But I did managed to find some time to pick up a book or two, and I thought I’d share one of my recent reads with you.the-great-alone-kristin-hannah

Kristin Hannah did it to me again. I always know I’m going to be up late and crying my eyes out when I pick up one of her books. The Great Alone didn’t stray from that pattern. Leni is a formidable kid tossed into a swirling vortex of survival from all different angles. Ms. Hannah shows us the gritty side of life on the Alaskan frontier, giving us an in depth look at life at it’s very basic: the need for food, heat, shelter.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t ready to stare the horror of PTSD in the face. Ernt is not a man I could like. But the resilience of the women kept me reading. Especially Leni, who at thirteen, is tossed into the wild, so to speak. She learns the hard way that the only person she can count on is herself. Well, maybe there’s one other person. 🙂

I cried for about the last 150 pages of this story. It was a cathartic cry, and I was so glad I kept reading all the way to the end. As with every single Kristin Hannah story I’ve read, it was worth it. So yes, this story is a highly recommend from me. It’s not an easy read, but it’s a fulfilling one.

Here’s what the story is all about:

Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam war a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: he will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.

Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown.

At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. In a wild, remote corner of the state, they find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.

But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own. In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves.

In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty and resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska―a place of incomparable beauty and danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.

New Year Happenings

As 2018  begins, I wanted to send out greetings and wishes to each of you for a year that is safe, peace-filled, and with a lot more happy than sad in it.

For me, the year means some changes to my writing. I’ve added a new genre – fantasy. The romance will stay and continue, but there’s been a fantasy  idea percolating in my head for years that I will also be working on. And it’s that genre that I have fun news about.

Laurie Ryan Fantasy

I entered the first story, Survival, (as yet unpublished) in my fantasy series, Guardian Druids: The Royan Legacy, in a contest and it’s a finalist! Winners won’t be announced until February 24th, but it feels like a good omen.

Things are going well in the romance genre, too. Healing Love, which is part of the Holiday Magic anthology with Lavada Dee, is now also a stand-alone novella. And there’s a new short story in the works…Lost, Then Found. Healing Love by Laurie Ryan

So I hope to be offering new content soon. And I wish you all a very, very Happy New Year!

Show Me now available!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00074]I’m thrilled to announce the release of my newest story. Show Me, about a woman’s journey through the ups and downs of cancer treatment, is my first story outside of the romance genre. I began this story to help myself mourn the loss of a good friend to an aggressive form of lung cancer. However, it was a long time before I had the emotional strength to finish it and in a lot of ways, this story has been a journey for me as well as for my character. Now, I have the privilege of sharing Show Me with you.

The Story

Cancer. It’s one of the scariest words in the world and one that no one wants to hear. Show Me is one woman’s poignant journey through hope and fear, learning to cope, dealing with disappointment, and defining relationships during the most traumatic experience of her life.

The words ovarian cancer infiltrate Celia Milbourne’s brain and send chills down her spine, settling in her heart like a mound of icy stones. She must dig deep for the strength to fight this medical beast and still maintain some measure of normalcy for her young daughter.

Aided by family and friends—and an empathic ghost named Seth—Celia embarks on a path riddled with challenges, filled with anguish and joy, and bolstered by an enduring hope sustained  by love.

Tropical Persuasions – Hold Onto that Summer Warmth!

Hi, everyone. As we wind our way toward the end of August, I’m hoping you all have had a summer filled with fond memories and fun times…and good weather. Is it bad that I’m already starting to look forward to a cooler season and curling up with some of the awesome books in my “to be read” pile?

I’ve kept busy with family and writing. We’ve taken several long weekends to go away, but mostly have been home. One of the good things about that is that my Tropical Persuasions series is now set for release. In fact, the first story is already out there!

I’m excited to reveal the covers for this series. An updated version of Stolen Treasures, the story of Dion Gaetani and Claire Saunders, who put everything on the line to capture a modern-day pirate, is now available on Amazon. Other venues coming soon.

Pirate’s Promise is slated for re-release on September 15th and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. I couldn’t write Stolen Treasures without realizing that the pirate, Hakon “Hawk” Thoralssen, needed his own story, so I introduce him to his attorney, Julia Branholt, and sparks fly.

And Dare To Love, the long-anticipated third and final story in the series, and also available for pre-order on Amazon, releases October 13th. Aidan Walker, friend and co-worker to Dion, meets his match in Gail Grayson, a spike-haired pixie who wants to turn the ladies’ man into a one-lady kind of guy.

As well, I’ve set up a newsletter list where news about my stories will be released first. To join the list, just click here and enter your name and email address.

Thanks! Enjoy the rest of your summer!

New Release – Northern Lights

The story inspired by a bucket list item of mine (seeing the Aurora Borealis) has arrived!

northernlightsnook

What it’s about:

When New York corporate man Renzo Gallini shows up with papers saying he owns the waystation Jess Jenkins lives and breathes for, she laughs in his face. But things get tense when he’s got the paperwork to prove it…and her father, who apparently signed their home away, is nowhere to be found.

Jess has lived her entire life at Last Chance Camp, a man’s world where femininity is relegated to wisps of time behind her closed apartment doors. Yet she’s proud of what they’ve built here. Last Chance is all she needs to be happy and no amber-eyed city-boy will convince her otherwise.

Renzo Gallini left New York on his mother’s foolish errand, to ferret out what changes would be needed to turn an Alaskan truck stop into a vacation destination. He finds little of merit in the wide spot in the road until the small community, led by a fiercely loyal tomboy, show him there’s more to Alaska than just ruts in the road. That survival depends not just on good planning, but on each other. And love can be found in places where you least expect it.

Where it’s at:

Barnes & Noble

Coming soon to iBooks and GooglePlay

A sample:

Ren sipped coffee from the restaurant’s porch and watched the tourist group outside dwindle until only Jesse was left. She pulled her hair free of its band and gazed skyward. Then, to his surprise, she began to twirl in slow circles, her body swaying in time to a music he could not hear, her arms outstretched to the meandering ribbons in the sky. Her dark hair, unbound now that her day was done, swirled about her in soft waves.

Ren froze, caught in the hypnotic display of her almost spiritual union with the sky around her. She moved with a fluid grace Ren found more profound and sensual than anything he’d ever experienced. He swore he could feel the thrum of the spirits flowing through his own veins as a web of peace settled around his beating heart.

As he watched, Jess’s soft sounds of delight were joined by another quieter, more elusive sound, almost like a hushed whistle. He smiled, betting that Jess would say the spirits approved.
He waited and watched as Jess danced in their midst until the last light faded from the night sky. He watched until she wandered beyond his sight. Even then, he stood, his coffee forgotten. He felt…bereft with her disappearance. He wanted to call her back.

Somehow, Ren knew that, with tonight’s events, his life had been forever changed. And right now, at this moment, he didn’t mind one bit.

Cover Reveal – Northern Lights by Laurie Ryan

With only about two weeks to release, I wanted to share the cover and blurb for my newest story, Northern Lights with you. This story holds a special place in my heart, since it’s wrapped around my opportunity to check off a bucket list item: seeing the Aurora Borealis. That night, or early morning, since it was 1a.m., was AWESOME. Threads of color moving across the sky, yet not moving. In fact, if you’ve had a chance to see the Northern Lights, I’d love to hear your stories.

Here There Be Witches

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but there’s a couple projects in my pipeline I’ll be talking about soon. In the meantime, I wanted to give a shout out to my friend, S. F. Chancellor, who has a new Young Adult story out. I haven’t read many witch stories, but this one, and the sassy heroine, Cali French, grabbed and held my attention. I was chuckling most of the way through as Cali struggles to come to terms with her powers while in the midst of crises. Add in one guardian angel trying to figure out how to handle his first assignment…Cali…and it’s a winner in my book!

heretherebewitches_lrg

What it’s about:

One chaotic week in October, former friends, a guardian angel, and a secret prophecy cause turmoil in the life of a teen-age witch-in-training.

Cali French, a high school senior, is cut out of her inner circle when she refuses to participate in a spell her friends want to cast. Cali fears the dark magic and the unknown consequences of the shortcut they want to take by casting the spell.

Unbeknownst to her, Cali is the subject of an important prophecy. Her former pals have discovered this and have an even more sinister motive in forcing her to cooperate in their work than Cali can imagine.

Her very life in peril, the young witch-in-training faces unknown dangers relying only on her unpolished skills and some assistance from a guardian angel and a gentle giant.
